Government response to UK riots is ‘woeful’
Spiked Online Editor Tom Slater slams the “woeful” response from the government to the UK riots.
Riots erupt in the UK, targeting asylum seeker hotels in response to false information spread on the stabbing attack that killed three girls.
“The response from the politicians has been woeful,” Mr Slater told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“There’s been very vague but pretty sinister talk about the role that social media companies must now play in clamping down on misinformation.
“Asking social media firms to be a ministry of truth is woeful, and I think it sends entirely the wrong message.”
“I think ordinary people are genuinely, as much as they are immediately horrified of what’s going on in the streets, there’s also an unease about the fact that this is going to lead to less open discussion about these issues, rather than more.”
