Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has strongly condemned the “gang of violent thugs” responsible for the chaos following the Southport stabbings and has announced a new national policing strategy in response.
After meeting with police chiefs, following protests in Southport, central London, Hartlepool, Manchester, and Aldershot, Sir Keir spoke at a press conference and blamed far-right groups for inciting the violence and announced measures to prevent “hooligans” from traveling to different areas to cause trouble.
He introduced a new police “capability” to coordinate responses to violent disorder across England.
He pointed out that these riots were neither legitimate protests nor acceptable, declaring that those involved were “bent on violence” and promising to prevent any “breakdown of law and order.”
